Robin van Persie has secured his own personal double by landing the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for this season.
The Dutchman’s sensational form this year has single handily taken Arsenal into the Champions League spots with 34 goals in all competitions this year.
The Gunners captain held off competition from Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes, with Clint Dempsey coming in 4th spot; however it was never in doubt that Van Persie would scoop the award:
“Robin was the overwhelming choice of our members this season and deservedly so after a magnificent campaign for Arsenal.
“The quality of his goals, attacking movement and consistency in a turbulent season for the Gunners has been eye-catching.
“The considerable size of his majority in the votes cast by our members reflected the general view that he has been the season’s most outstanding individual performer.” FWA Chairman Steve Bates told Sky Sports.
